Did you know that Earth Day was founded here in Wisconsin? Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22nd, is a global observance that promotes awareness and action on environmental issues. It was founded in 1970 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson and has become an international event observed in over 190 countries. Earth Day raises global environmental consciousness, including challenges such as climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion. You may find educational events, community clean-ups, and sustainability initiatives, and other activities incentives in your community.

At Cabin Creations, we do what we can to keep our Earth, and the Northwoods, preserved. We choose to recycle our cardboard and other recyclable materials at our township recycling center. We drop off plastic bags at grocery recycling center. Both our paper and plastic shopping bags are made of recycled materials. We reuse our shipping materials or drop them off to others who can reuse them. Our heating and cooling is on a set schedule to reduce usage when the store is closed.

We also offer a number of brands that use recycled materials in their products and packaging. Our outdoor poly lumber materials are made out of recycled milk jugs. Soak-It-Up and other Swedish-style dishcloths save thousands of paper towels. ZipTop silicone storage containers save on single use plastic bags. Pumpernickel Press greeting cards are printed on eco-friendly paper. Many of vendors have recycling and carbon footprint initiatives within their production processes.

We encourage you to think of a few ways to reuse, reduce, recycle or complete another eco-friendly activity over the next few weeks. When the snow finally melts, our family will pick up trash along our neighborhood roads and recycle what we can. Here are some other simple ideas to make the Northwoods (Wisconsin and the Earth too) a better place:

  • Plant a tree or garden. Trees help absorb carbon dioxide, reduce air pollution, provide habitat for wildlife, and contribute to overall environmental health. Gardening is a great way to connect with nature and promote sustainable food production.
  • Use water collection barrels off of rain gutters to reuse water for gardens and flowers.
  • Choose not to take a bag or a receipt when shopping.
  • Compost food scraps and lawn clippings instead of throwing them in the trash. There are a lot of great container options for composting if critters are an issue in your area.
  • Carpool, bike or walk when possible. Catch a ride to a sporting event with another family, walk to run your errands in town, or bike ride to visit a friend or neighbor.
  • Research eco-friendly crafts online, such as bird feeders, artwork, and more.
  • Conserve energy by turning off lights and electronics when not in use. Unplug cords from outlets when not used for long periods of time, turn off the water when brushing your teeth, hang clothes on racks or outside to dry, use eco-settings on dishwashers, switch lightbulbs for energy saving versions.
  • Replace single use plastics and papers with reusable options.
  • Enjoy the Northwoods! Go out for a hike, camp, fish, and engage in other outdoor activities to appreciate the beauty and value of our beautiful area!
